The No. 1 question we get asked is: Where does the money raised by the lottery really go? Perhaps you’ve asked the same question at one point.
The answer is pretty simple. Your play allows us to raise the money that funds education programs throughout the state – programs like Pre-K, scholarships and grants for college students, safe transportation to-and-from school, school construction, and the salaries of essential school staff that operate our schools.
Let’s break it down. Here’s how money raised by the lottery flowed last year into education programs:
- $385.9 million – School Staff
- $215.3 million – School Construction
- $43.4 million – Scholarships & Grants
- $78.2 million – NC Pre-K
- $21.3 million – School Transportation
We know this might be a lot to digest. It’s hard to fathom what $21.3 million feels like, much less $385.9 million.

All communities benefit. Hit up your own county to see how some of that money helped students and schools.
Have you seen some of that impact?
It may have come in the form of your high school senior receiving an Education Lottery Scholarship or grant. Perhaps you drove past the ground breaking of a brand new school. Or maybe your pre-schooler is getting a free academic experience before hitting the ground running in kindergarten?
Regardless of how big or small it may seem on an individual level, the impact is there. Share what you’ve seen in a comment. We’d love to hear your story.
