Currituck County man wins $2 million prize on scratch-off

Scott Woolard Jr. of Jarvisburg took a chance on a $20 scratch-off ticket and won a $2 million prize.

Woolard bought his lucky 100X The Cash ticket from the North River Tobacco Barn on Caratoke Highway in Powells Point.

When Woolard arrived to claim his prize Wednesday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million He chose the lump-sum amount of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $852,126.

Really,is that really true that you can leave your annuity payments to family member/or members like your children etc in event of your death? I have always been told no ,that you would lose it so I have always figured thats why everyone always rook lump sum due to you could die next day etc?NC Lottery
Hi, Beverly. That's correct- winners can leave annuity payments to their designated estate in the chance that they were to unexpectedly pass away. So in the event of their death, the payments would still be paid as scheduled initially!

Could you confirm that if a winner chooses to take the annuity payments, that in the event of his/her death, the payments would continue to the legal heirs? It seems like taking the lump sum isn't always a wise decision as so much money is "left on the table."NC Lottery
Hi, Mary! We can confirm that - If a winner were to pass away, all remaining annuity payments would be paid to the winner's designated estate. Hope this helps!
