Wilson County woman celebrates $1 million scratch-off win

Dora Arzate-Bello of Sims took a chance on a $30 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize.

Arzate-Bello bought the lucky Millionaire Maker ticket from Mr. S Tobacco and Grill on U.S. 264 Alt in Sims. When she arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to collect her prize, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $426,069.

The Millionaire Maker game launched in March 2021. Arzate-Bello became the 28th person to win one of the $1 million prizes.

Congratulations to you but I have a question for lottery headquarters. Why do so much taxes are taken out and if you win a million dollars why does it start at 600,000 where is the other 400,000, why do the state get more of your money than you do. Taking the 50,000 a year is probably better less taxesNC Lottery
Hi, Monica! The difference between the lump sum payment and the annuity amount (the $1 million) accounts for the interest that would be earned on the money over the time it would take to pay out the annuity payments. Some players prefer the lump sum up front, while others prefer the yearly payments! Either way, minimum state and federal tax withholding amounts are taken out, it just depends on whether it is all at once up front, or annually!

Hey there, David! We see lots of winners all across the state. Our tickets are randomly distributed through the secure printing process, so we don't even know where a big winner is until a lucky player scratches it off and comes in to claim their prize! We actually had a couple of big scratch-off wins from Durham this month - a $5,000 one on 3/21 and a $10,000 one on 3/10!
