Pitt County man wins first $5 million prize in scratch-off game

Mario Delgado of Winterville tried his luck on a $30 scratch-off ticket and became the first winner of a $5 million prize in a new lottery game.

Delgado bought his lucky 200X The Cash ticket from the Speedway on North Memorial Drive in Greenville.

When Delgado arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $250,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. He chose the lump-sum amount of $3 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $2,130,309.

The 200X The Cash game debuted in March with six top prizes of $5 million and 18 $100,000 prizes. Five $5 million prizes and 15 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

@ncel. Regarding the Colossal game. How do you guys know if there is a $10 million scratcher floating around if scratch off games are printed via a machine?NC Lottery
Hi, Sheila! We set up each game to have a certain number of prizes at each prize level, and then games are printed during the secure printing process to include that many winners. Top prizes are randomly printed on the tickets throughout that process, and all of our games undergo a post-game audit to ensure that the odds and prizes were as designed. So we know that there is still one last top prize left to be claimed out there somewhere!

Question for NCEL: If someone has entries into a 2nd chance or rewards drawing and when the drawing is held they're a winner, but prior to drawing they had died for some reason, would deceased winner's children or other relative be able to claim prize?NC Lottery
Hi, Paul - you ask a great question! Apologies for our delay in responding, we wanted to check with other NCEL team members to be sure we had the correct answer for you. If a Lucke-Rewards and Second Chance winner died before they could claim their prize, the heirs would need to provide some info and documents to our Prize Validation teams, including the winner's death certificate, will, letter from executors of estate, photo IDs, etc. but once that was verified, the heirs would be able to claim the prize for the deceased. Hey, Sheila, great question! Colossal Cash is one of our older games, which is why there is only that one top prize remaining. But we release new scratch-offs each month on First Tuesday, and you can always view our current list of scratch-offs on our site here: https://nclottery.com/scratch-off and you can click on a specific game to see more about odds and prizes remaining! This drives me Crazy. He should of won 10 million. I must be the only one that thinks the lottery cutting prizes back from a 10 million dollar ticket to a 5 Million dollar ticket is okay! IT is NOT. Thank You
