For Bill Sorrell of Stokesdale, his VIP experience at the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 was truly a “once in a lifetime experience.”
“I’ve always loved racing so being able to do this is just really cool,” Sorrell said. “I just love the atmosphere here.”
Sorrell entered a Lucke-Rewards drawing and won the prestigious role of serving as the Grand Marshal for the NCEL 200 race. As the Grand Marshal, Sorrell had the honor of saying the four most famous words in racing: “Drivers, start your engines.”
After he delivered his line, he had a chance to ride in the pace car before the start of the race with his several members of his family.
“When that pace car went around the turn doing about 100, I was like ‘Yeah, I like this,’” Sorrell said.
For Sorrell, one of the best parts of the experience was having his family there to share it with him. Sorrell brought his son, two nephews, his son-in-law, and his son-in-law’s father with him to the race.
“Being able to have my family with me too, that’s what it’s all about for me,” Sorrell said. “They were just as excited as I was.”
Sorrell said when he first received the notification that he won, he didn’t understand what all his VIP experience entailed.
“I thought I just won race tickets,” Sorrell said. “When I found out what all I won, I was like, ‘Are you for real?’”
In addition to his Grand Marshal duties, Sorrell and his guests received pit passes, a tour of the driver’s garage, and access to the pit suites for a bird’s eye view of the race.
“When I first learned what I would be doing as Grand Marshal I thought I would be a nervous wreck, but it was really cool,” Sorrell said. “Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
