David Chestnutt of Clinton took a chance on a $10 scratch-off and won the first $1 million prize of a new scratch-off game.

Chestnutt purchased his lucky Carolina Jackpot ticket from the Am Station on Southeast Boulevard in Clinton on Tuesday.

When he arrived at lottery headquarters Wednesday afternoon, Chestnutt could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $426,063.

The $10 Carolina Jackpot game launched this month with five top prizes of $1 million. Four $1 million prizes remain to be won.

The game also features a new second-chance opportunity for those who buy Carolina Jackpot tickets. For the first time, any Carolina Jackpot scratch-off can be entered into second-chance drawings that feature a rolling jackpot. As more tickets are entered, the larger the rolling jackpot grows.

Try buying 5 in a row..yes 5 in a row of the $30 scratch offs and NOT ONE is a winner. Not even a $30 winner. Now that’s highway robbery. Then someone comes along in my county-Sampson-and buys one ticket and wins a million. I am always happy for those that win bc maybe they need it more than me. I just always hope they spend it wisely bc it does go away fast. And no, I do not spend bill money or food money to purchase lottery tickets. Everyone should have a set amount they spend bc the chances are you won’t win a thing.

I have won a 500.00 second chance prize, a big set of poker equipment and three 1000.00 scratch off prizes over the years, and I live in a small rural county where it seems like very few big prizes happen. But the more people playing ,like in cities, the more people will win statistically. I play 10 and 20 and occasionally 30 dollar scratch off tickets because the odds and prizes are better, but I always enter second chance drawings. Pay attention to the remaining prizes on scratch off tickets and only spend money that is not critical to your obligations and you will enjoy " treasure hunting " and helping N.C. education also. Good luck!!

That's correct the same counties do win all the time Not once has Hoke County been on here either. I've stopped playing the fixed lottery in this state.NC Lottery
Hi Kristie, it takes a lot of luck to win the lottery, and we don't know where the next big winner be! I did want to share some big wins from Hoke County though! We had a $200,000 Powerball winner earlier this year, https://nclottery.com/NewsBlogDetails/2022/1/12/Hoke-County-man-wins-a-200000-Powerball-prize and there was a $1 million winner last year who won on a Millionaire Maker scratch-off! https://nclottery.com/NewsBlogDetails/2021/7/29/Hoke-County-man-bags-1-million-lottery-prize

I feel the same way seems like the same counties win all the time. Even on the second chances never see johnston CountyNC Lottery
Hi, Yolanda! To ease your concerns, we can assure you that there is no winner bias when selecting a winner for our second-chance or Lucke-Rewards drawings. The Random Number Generator assigns each entry a random number and then picks one of the random numbers. The more entries you make into a drawing, the more chances you have to win. But having even just one entry in a drawing gives you a chance to win!

I wonder why no big winners in the Ahoskie era never won anything with this tickets all ways the same areas.NC Lottery
Hi, Gregory! We tend to see more winners in areas with larger populations. This is due to more people taking a chance to win and playing in those areas. The last big winner from Ahoskie was in 2020: https://nclottery.com/NewsBlogDetails/2020/5/16/Hertford-County-man-loaded-with-luck-wins-100000-prize, but all of our tickets are distributed randomly across the state, and we don't even know where they end up! Whether you play in a big city or a small town, your odds of being a lucky winner are the same - it just takes a whole lot of luck!

Have won a few hundred on these scratch offs. The million would be better to win though. Congratulations on your big win!
