Bruce Tipton of Charlotte said he had to take time to calm himself down after his $5 scratch-off won him a $200,000 prize.

“I was honestly too scared to drive,” Tipton said. “It took a while before I could stop shaking.”

Tipton, a 41-year-old construction worker, became the first winner of the top prize in the new $5 Carolina Jackpot game.

“When I saw a lot of zeroes on there,” Tipton said, “I knew I won something big.”

He bought his lucky Carolina Jackpot ticket from the Circle K on Freedom Drive in Charlotte.

“I was actually looking for two other tickets but they were both sold out so I bought that one instead,” Tipton said.

Tipton collected his prize Thursday from lottery headquarters and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $142,021.

He said he would like to use his winnings to help out his family members and possibly buy a house that he can fix up.

The $5 Carolina Jackpot game debuted this month with six $200,000 prizes. Five $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

The game also features a new second-chance opportunity for those who buy Carolina Jackpot tickets. For the first time, any Carolina Jackpot scratch-off can be entered into second-chance drawings that feature a rolling jackpot. As more tickets are entered, the larger the rolling jackpot grows.

Seeing all these winners, make me want to go out of town to buy a bunch of scratch offs. Here in Richmond County, you'll never see any winners that has won that much here. 200,000 NC Lottery
Hi Roger, thanks for the comment! Just wanted to let you know that moving to another area in the state isn't a way to beat the odds, as the odds will remain the same no matter where you are in the state. Good luck!

Well congratulations on your big win! Helping family members is good, just don't over do it with how much you want to give each of them. They might want to come back for more. Buying and remodeling a house can be a headache, never know what problems you can run into. But all well, have fun with your winning. 142,021 is not to shabby, nice chunk of change there. I'm still trying to win, more than ever now since my wife has passed away in April. Today the 28th would be our 42nd wedding anniversary. GOD rest her soul. It's hard to lose your spouse to! Good luck on your house searching.

NCEL states all around are dropping numbers almost similar to NC dropping trip 777's. Yet NC is continually blocking them. What's really going on?NC Lottery
Hi, Shirley! Liability limits are in place for our Pick 3 and Pick 4 games. The limit is not on sales, but on the potential amount of prizes that could be won if a particular set of numbers were drawn in a drawing. Once a particular combination has reached a potential of paying out $10 million, then no additional tickets with those set of numbers are sold. This can happen with popular numbers, particularly "Trips" in Pick 3 and "Quads" in Pick 4. The liability limit only applies to one possible set of numbers–not all of the others in a drawing.

I THINK NCEL SHOULD POST HOW MANY ENTRIES WON ON THE 2nd CHANCE AS WELL AS LUCKY REWARDS. AT LEAST YOU CAN SEE A LIMIT ON LUCKY REW. , BUT NO LIMITS ARE SET ON 2nd CHANCE, WHICH MEANS PEOPLE WHO HAVE MORE MONEY ARE NATURALLY GONNA HAVE A HUGE EDGE.
