Greensboro man celebrates $5 million win

Torrance Person of Greensboro took a chance on a $30 scratch-off ticket and won a $5 million prize.

Person bought his lucky 200X The Cash ticket from the 7-Eleven on Greensboro Road in High Point.

When Person arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $250,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. He chose the lump-sum amount of $3 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $2,130,309.

The 200X The Cash game debuted in March with six top prizes of $5 million and 18 $100,000 prizes. Four $5 million prizes and 13 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

He chose the lump-sum amount of $3 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $2,130,309. Would be nice to receive a monthly check every month, instead of 250,000 a year. After taxes is taken out, and you decide to buy a high dollar house or even pay down on a nice house, there be much left. Going to have to wait a whole year,before you will any more of it. Wow! That's a long time to wait on the 250,000 then you'll be taxed again.

Great question, Anthony! The difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the prize to the winner - so lump sum payments are 40% of the annuity prize amount.

Well I don't know when he purchased his ticket, but I went in that store Saturday afternoon about 5:00 to buy that game scratch ticket, and the spot for them was out. Either way, it wouldn't be the first time I barely missed out.

Hi, Clint! We definitely see a good amount of winners that choose the lump sum option to get their winnings up front. Again please answer my question of : Why doesn't the NCEL advertise the new scratch tickets that are coming the next month??? They have the print out in the stores. Virginia does!!!! Major greed and stupidity as he gave the NC lottery back about 2 million by NOT taking the 250K annuity for 20 years, what a waste. Probably will loose it all in less than 3 years.

Hi Chelli, by law the lottery is required to tax wins over $5,000 at a state rate of 4.99% and a federal rate of 24%. The lottery will only withhold the minimum state and federal taxes for lottery prizes.
