Wake County woman collects $887,156 Cash 5 jackpot

Eleanor Whitehead of Apex tried her luck on a $1 Cash 5 ticket and won $887,156.

Whitehead purchased her lucky ticket at the Fusion Seven on North Main Street in Fuquay Varina and won the Sept. 8 drawing. She arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to collect her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $629,971.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night. Monday’s jackpot is $150,000.

Ticket sales from draw games such as Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $2.5 million a day on average for education. For details on how $65 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Wake County in 2021, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

I have a grandson and play lottery faithfully why must teachers have to beg for stuff for kids. Also no one never wins big in my neighborhood all the winners are outside of our region discriminated are weNC Lottery
Hey there, Delayvian! We wanted to let you know that legislators – not lottery officials – decide how to best use the money raised by the lottery. So far legislators have not opted to use lottery funds for classroom supplies, but the money raised helps meet other important needs, such as operating costs and transportation, school maintenance and construction, prekindergarten programs, salaries for school workers, and needs-based scholarships and grants!

Hi, Donna! With our scratch-off top prizes, players have the option of claiming as a lump sum or as annuity payments over 20 years. The difference in lump sum ($600,000 on $1 million) accounts for the interest that would be accrued and used to pay out the prize over those 20 years. So if a player chooses the lump sum, they win $600,000 up front and after required minimum state and federal tax withholdings, win around $426K. Whereas with Cash 5, just taxes are taken out, as there is no annuity option. Hope this helps to clarify!
