Yancey County man wins first $150,000 prize in new scratch-off game

Johnny McCurry of Burnsville took a chance on a $5 scratch-off and won the first $150,000 top prize in the new Power Cashword game.

McCurry bought his lucky ticket from Southeast Energy on U.S. 19 East Bypass in Burnsville.

He arrived Monday at lottery headquarters to claim his prize and, after required tax withholdings, took home $106,876.

The Power Cashword game debuted in October with six $150,000 top prizes. Five $150,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Yancey County has received $6.69 million in state grants to help meet its school construction needs. For details on other ways money raised by the lottery made a difference in Yancey County in 2022, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Wow! What luck! Waiting on the 8th to come get my 100,000 on the bonus cash entry. Remember, I found a penny outside the store the other day. So I'm hoping it's still lucky for me. My daughter's car been sitting in yard over a year now, could use some of the winning to get it fixed.

Not to be disrespectful but edgecombe County school school is fall apart when my daughter went to southwest edgecombe when it rain they had buckets all in the schools catching the rain and all of school need repairing so my next question is when will they get funds? And Nash county keep building brand new schools. Just woke up with this on my heart to say.NC Lottery

Counties and local officials work to determine how lottery funds will be used to assist with school construction, and in 2017, a needs-based program was also adopted to increase funding for school construction.
