Wilmington man collects top prize in new game

Michael Guyton of Wilmington took a chance on a $5 scratch-off ticket and won the first $200,000 prize in a new scratch-off game.

Guyton bought his lucky Emerald 8s ticket from Speedway on Market Street in Wilmington.

He arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $142,501.

The Emerald 8s game debuted this month with six $200,000 top prizes. Five $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Hi @MARGARET G, with Digital Instant games, the prize is determined as soon as the player hits the play button to start the game. This means the outcome of that game is randomly determined instantly upon purchasing the game via clicking the play button. In this same way, if you were to close out the app after clicking play but before the animation finished, if you won in your game, your winnings would still be deposited in your account.

It would be nice if you would send some of the winning tickets to the western part of the state. It appears all the winners are Charlotte, Raleigh and coastal areas.

When playing the instant game and get the bonus feature, I always get 2 matching jackpot symbols or a set of 2 matching symbols for a jackpot. When I select the next trunk it’s always for the lowest amount. Why isn’t the entire card revealed at the end to show where all the symbols are and that there was a third jackpot symbol to match the two you had revealed. That way people can be assured that the 3 matching symbol were indeed on the board and that the game is completely fair. With the way it’s set up we have to take your word that all of the amount/symbols have 3 in place.
