Cary man collects $577,594 Cash 5 jackpot win

Daniel Hanson of Cary tried his luck on a $1 Cash 5 ticket and won a $577,594 jackpot.

Hanson bought his lucky Quick Pick ticket from Parkway Convenience on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary. His ticket matched all five numbers to win the jackpot in the Dec. 20 drawing. The odds of matching numbers on all five balls are 1 in 962,598.

He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Thursday and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $411,536.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Friday’s jackpot is $100,000.

Bought my 5 Powerball tickets on line was suppose to get 10 digital plays on underwater treasures . Said I had 10 free games it would not let me play them . Is there a problem with the website ? Congrats on your win .NC Lottery

Congratulations! I'm going to talk about scratch offs real quick. I don't believe the chances of winning on a scratch off should be more just because the person buys it in Raleigh or Charlotte. It's like throwing confetti in the air and saying the winning piece is going to land in Wake County. It makes no sense. The only way this is happening is if the winning piece is being placed in Wake County.

Congrats to Daniel. However, this is yet aanother Wake county win for large Cash 5 wins. In fact, this is the 3rd in a row for Wake winners. Why does the rest of the state waste time and money to play?NC Lottery
Hi, Floyd! Anywhere there are more chances being taken to win — for example, Wake County — the odds will play out more often there over time. You'll have a larger volume of both winning and non-winning tickets in proportion with the odds. That has no effect on the likelihood of a particular ticket winning or not winning a prize, whether it be in a big city or a small town. It has to be that way in order for the lottery to be fair to everyone.
