Cabarrus man celebrates $2 million scratch-off win

Matthew Helms of Concord tried his luck on a $20 scratch-off ticket and took home a $2 million top prize.

Helms bought his 100X The Cash ticket at the Little Buck Food Mart on South Union Street in Concord.

He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters. He had the choice of receiving the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the $1.2 million lump sum, and after required federal and state withholdings, took home $855,006.

The new 100X The Cash launched in December 2022 with five $2 million top prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes. Three $2 million top prizes and seven $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise an average of $2.5 million a day for education. For details on how $15.6 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Cabarrus County in 2022, visit our “Impact” section.

if this is a $2million win, how does it go to $1.2million and then gets taxed on that? where did $800,000 go? sounds like a SCAMNC Lottery
Hi, Arlene! The $2 million prize could be claimed as $2 million in annual payments over 20 years, or as a lump sum up front of $1.2 million. The difference in these amounts accounts for the interest that would be earned over those 20 years and used to pay out the prize over time. It's up to the winner which option they want to choose, but we will withhold minimum state (4.75%) and federal (24%) taxes from either option.
