Charlotte man claims $1 million lottery prize

Wayne Brown of Charlotte took a chance on a $25 scratch-off ticket and won a $1 million prize.

Brown bought his lucky Extreme Cash ticket from the 7-Eleven on Old Concord Road in Charlotte.

When Brown arrived at lottery headquarters Monday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $427,507.

@ncel, I purchased a $20 Premier Cash scratch off this morning. I checked your website and it says this card is on pickup and there are no top prizes left. I did not scratch it. Can I return it back to the store for a different card?NC Lottery
Hi, Sheila! Scratch-off ticket purchases cannot be returned or exchanged. The ticket, while currently in the process of being picked up, is still eligible to win prizes and earn Lucke-Rewards points - winning tickets can be cashed in for 90 days after the official end of the game.
