Johnston County man screams at the top of his lungs after $2 million win

A break from routine created a lucky break for John Teague of Selma after a $20 scratch-off purchase revealed a $2 million prize.

“I was scratching in my truck and I’m like, ‘This can’t be real,’” Teague recalled. “First thing I did was scream at the top of my lungs.”

The big win occurred after Teague altered his usual morning routine of heading straight to work as a maintenance director in Youngsville to stop for gas at the Circle K on North Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield. He also said he normally plays Cashword scratch-offs but this time he chose a Grand Money ticket.

“I just had this overwhelming feeling telling me to buy that ticket,” he said.

Teague said he called his wife right away to tell her he won.

“I told her, ‘Now I can get you the house that you deserve,’” Teague said. “This is a life-changing event.”

When Teague arrived at lottery headquarters to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the lump-sum amount of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $855,006.

“This really is a blessing for our family,” he said. “Hallelujah.”

In addition to buying a house, Teague said he can pay off his truck and buy a new lawn mower.

The Grand Money game debuted in September 2021 with four top prizes of $2 million and six $100,000 prizes. Since Teague won the last $2 million prize, the lottery will begin the process of ending the game.

I say the same as you Donna it's a chance we twe take each time we play any game. If it's your time to win it's your time if you pbuy just one ticket or rolls of tickets. MaybStop complaining like a sore looser.

Dear lovely people, if you don't like how things work, don't play. You are gambling. If you win anything, just be grateful you were lucky and stop complaining.

Hi, @Nikki! Thanks for the opportunity to share more info on this! The difference between the annuity and the lump sum is not a penalty--winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When the lottery began, only annuities were offered for prizes like this. Players asked to have the choice to take a lump sum, so we began offering it. It is always up to the player to choose which one to go with. With either choice, minimum taxes will be withheld. Hope this helps clear things up!

I'm with you, Jami! I've brought three $30 tickets. From different stores in different counties..NOTHING! I'm done donating to the NCEL!

Congratulations to the Johnston County man that won on his luck. But like I posted a few days ago, the lottery take a significant amount immediately when you read the back of the scratch off. I won a million 3 years ago on a $25 dollar scratch off. I was a millionaire until turning in that card and the lottery took 400 thousand from the top. When i asked why is that, all I got was, "we can't disclose that information." So when I asked how much tax was taken for federal and state, I went to my calculator and saw immediately that the annuity is well worth a 20 guarantee than a lump sum for less than half of your actual winnings. The lottery responded to my post but still didn't explain what I posted. I'm sure the lottery is going to comment to me again, but I feel you Rita, Jami, Darnell.

How can you justify taking out the interest for 20 years, when 99% of the time, people spend their winnings within a year? Sometimes faster? Are you all "FORTUNE TELLERS"? No, you are just SHADEY CROOKS!

3/22/2023 03:15 - Jami R.

You’re not alone Rita P. I bought six $30 tickets consecutively from same roll and NOTHING. Not even $30. I really am happy for people that win but in my opinion the big winnings tickets are places where NCEL wants them placed. However I still hope and still play. I guess that’s just my stupidity. LOL.NC Lottery
Hi Jami! We’re sorry to hear that none of your tickets were lucky winners this time. If the odds of winning a prize are 1 in 4, it does not mean you’re guaranteed to win a prize if you buy four tickets in a row. It just means that 25% of all tickets printed for that game have a prize on them. That means if you were to buy four tickets in a row, you could lose on all four, win on all four, or fall somewhere in between.

The rules need to be changed! 99% of the time people choose the lump sum! Why take taxes out for 20 years that the money would had accumulated, if they choose the lump sum? The "MATH" is not "MATHING"! Between the N.C. LOTTERY and the GOVERNMENT "WE THE PEOPLE" are being "BAMBOOZLED"! Just another "BIG LIE"!

It must be nice because we can't win $30 over here in Hertford County bout 11 $30 scratch off from same roll and can't win nothing smh that's just wrong I know it's a chance we take but seriously 11 cards and not a $

I don't understand the rules either to win a scratch off worth $2 million and only receive $800 thousand. Don't sound right to me but congratulations anywayNC Lottery

Congratulations ?? “I really don’t understand that Rules if you Win $2 million dollars but only receive $1.2 million then taxing on top of taxing to receive $826k. That’s false advertising the ticket should say Top Prize $1.2 million not $2million “I where is all the taxes going $800k plus additional taxes smdh” something isn’t Right! ??????? NC Lottery
Hi Brent, In general, top prizes of $1 million or more for scratch-offs offer players the option of the lump sum or annuity. The difference you noted is not a penalty, but simply the difference that money would make in interest if it sat in the bank for 20 years.

There are 7000 retailers in the state. How long does it take to pick up the tickets? Since the top prize is one, should any additional sales be blocked in the computer system?System?
