See how money raised by lottery helps your county

Ever wondered how the money raised by the lottery supports education?

You can find the latest information for each of the state’s 100 counties on nclottery.com and in new brochures headed to a lottery retail store near you. The information, provided by the state, shows:

  • How much money your county received to help build and repair its schools?
  • How many scholarships and grants helped make college more affordable for students in your county.
  • How much your school system received for school staff and school transportation.
  • How many four-year-olds from your county could attend a free NC Pre-K program.

Every year, your lottery receives a report from the state on how money raised – thanks to your play – is distributed to each and every one of our 100 counties. The lottery uses the report to update education information on its website and brochures shared in all stores selling lottery tickets.

View the new information on the Education page of nclottery.com.

Look for the brochure in the lottery play center wherever lottery tickets are sold. Each county gets its own version.

Last year, almost half of the money distributed helped to meet the need for new schools and to repair older ones. Every county received funds to help build and repair schools, including $300,000 each in repair and renovations funds.

Twenty-eight counties received additional grants, up to $40 million, to help build a new school.

If you want to see the total amount your county has received since the lottery started, just check out your county’s page in the Education section.

The lottery is proud to do its part in supporting public education in North Carolina.

Why don’t you include a game that is spread evenly across the state rather than splitting the money by county based on sales in each county? Help out the areas in NC that don’t have large populations or higher salaries. NC Lottery
Hi Connelle, State legislators decide how to best use the funds we raise. We don't have a role deciding which counties receive or how much in funding. We just offer games, award prizes, and provide our earnings to the state.

Free Pre-K should be available in all counties. While my children have been homeschooled, studies show that Pre-K is beneficial for future learning AND it helps to offset daycare expenses for poor families

Who and what determines which systems and schools get money and how much. The schools I live around and my son periodically attends still have broken down and -out trailers. I'm not understanding. NC Lottery
Hello Maketta, State legislators decide how to best use the funds we raise. We don't have a role deciding which programs receive funding. We just offer games, award prizes, and provide our earnings to the state. Hi, Laureen! We definitely agree - our educators do such hard work and we would love to see them rewarded for that. Elected officials, not the lottery, decide how best to use the money we raise. They must weigh all the needs for our schools, from classroom supplies to teacher pay. While there might be different opinions on the best use of money raised by the lottery, that does not mean the way it is used isn’t doing a lot of good!

Hi, Bonnie! Since the lottery began, the money has been directed to pay for programs like school construction, prekindergarten programs, and college scholarships. However, the state spends more than $15 billion a year on K-12 and state college funding. So, while the funds we provide each year make a difference, it will never cover every need - but that doesn't mean the money raised isn't doing a whole lot of good!

Is the counter intuitive to do something wrong, and then say you’re doing right? Is gambling wrong? Yes. Why? If someone has to lose for someone else to win, then that is not love and that is wrong. But look of all the scholarships in the new schools and everything. Is doing the wrong thing justified??
