Mecklenburg County man enjoys $2 million scratch-off win

Charles Stewart of Mint Hill tried his luck on a $20 scratch-off and won a $2 million top prize.

Stewart bought his lucky 100X The Cash ticket at Earp’s Express on Brighton Park Drive in Mint Hill.

He claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters. He had the choice of receiving the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the $1.2 million lump sum and, after required federal and state withholdings, took home $855,006.

The 100X The Cash game launched in December with five $2 million top prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes. Two $2 million top prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

NO, Charlotte and Meck County do not get a lot of big winners. If you do a head count on this blog for say, 30 days, you will see more winners from small towns.

Everyones loves to say Charlotte wins all of the prizes, but fail to realize that 75% of prizes of million more are won in small TOWNS, not in larger cities within Charlotte, Raleigh or Fayetteville! Don't believe it? Ask NCEL for a lottery winner distribution report. Oh, they don't freely publish since it is not difficult to crunch numbers and see that the only thing random about winning 1M + tickets is that they are distributed in small populations of less than 100k. Tickets are distributed randomly throughout the entire run of a game - where a winning ticket will show up is a mystery until a lucky player scratches one off! Why is it always big winners in Charlotte and Raleigh area it's not in Bailey,Spring Hope,Rocky Mount, Middlesex area but anyway Congratulations ????NC Lottery
Hi Joyce. As we explained to Ralph, every lottery ticket has an equal chance at winning, regardless of where it was purchased. If you were to move to Raleigh, you'd have more neighbors; if you moved to a tiny town, you'd have less. But what everyone would have in common in all those places is that each individual would have the exact same chance of winning as all prize distribution is random.

I have noticed the same thing ,more big winners around lottery HQ,Charlotte and Raleigh, while Cumberland Co. donates the most but not even half the big winners are from their,there goes my second chance odds out the window now NC Lottery

I strongly believe names should not be broadcasted. I understand that it's the law to publish the names. I just think this practice invites criminals to the lottery winner.NC Lottery

The only exceptions to providing a winner's name are specifically provided in the State Lottery Act, which excludes information regarding certain winners if they have a valid protective order or an Address Confidentiality Program authorization card. If a player has concerns about their safety when claiming a prize, we recommend they speak with authorities or advisors before coming to lottery headquarters to claim.

Hi, Sean! People don’t always buy their lottery tickets in the neighborhoods where they live. They purchase them on their way to or from work, while shopping or running other errands, or even at the airport. We see players from all across our state that come from all walks of life!
