Wake County woman celebrates $5 million win

Elizabeth Jarvis of Wake Forest took a chance on a $30 scratch-off ticket and won a $5 million prize.

Jarvis bought her lucky 200X The Cash ticket from Rose Mart on Durham Road in Wake Forest.

When Jarvis arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to collect her prize, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $250,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. She chose the lump-sum amount of $3 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $2,137,509.

The 200X The Cash game debuted in March 2022 with six top prizes of $5 million and 18 $100,000 prizes. Three $5 million prizes and seven $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Just curious about where the 2 million went, because I thought she won five million but you're saying 3 million so why are you all taxing twice NC Lottery
Hey there, Monica! Winners are given the choice between a $5 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $3 million all at once. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity prize values accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $5 million prize to the winner. Whether a player chooses annuity or lump sum is up to them, but either way we are required to withhold the minimum tax amounts (24% for Federal and 4.75% for NC).

Hi, Tony! Yes, if a winner chooses the annuity payment option and passes away before the 20 payments are made, the remaining payments would be made to the winner's estate.

Just won the pick 3 last night online. Found out today it’s SEVEN days to verify my ID and process the payment. You can cash that ticket without an ID same day anywhere in the state. Online convenience more like inconvenience

The difference between the annuity ($5 million) and lump sum ($3 million) prize amounts accounts for the interest that would be earned over time and used to pay off the prize if the winner opted for annual payments. Which option a winner chooses is up to them - but either way, we withhold the minimum required amount of taxes (4.75% for NC, 24% for federal). Hope this helps to clarify!
