Johnston County woman wins $1 million lottery prize

Lowanda Kane of Garner tried her luck on a $10 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize.

Kane bought her lucky $1,000,000 Bankroll ticket from Turner Mini Mart on Benvenue Road in Rocky Mount.

When she arrived at lottery headquarters on Thursday, Kane had the choice of taking the $1 million prize as an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and took home $427,503 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

The $1,000,000 Bankroll game launched in November 2020. Since Kane won the last top prize, the lottery will end the game.

So FOR OUR INFO., NCEL, What happens to all those $100,000.00 prizes left on these ENDED games??? And why does the retailer have such authority to NOT order these games? And here's a thought, why not put these "unpopular" games out for half price? NC Lottery
Hi Georgia, Half of unclaimed prize money goes to education—the good cause that the lottery serves. The other half is available to be used as prize money in other games and lottery promotions. It’s up to the retailer to determine which tickets will be re-ordered, as not every game is as popular at one store as it is at another. You can always request that a retailer re-order a particular game if you’re interested in playing it! If they don’t want to order the specific game you are looking for, another option may be to search for retail locations near your area here: nclottery.com/WhereToPlay

wish it was easier to play online. Sometimes I can get on easy with no problems and then again it says to deposit or purchase must be in NC which I am, and says my geo location is not right. What do you do?NC Lottery

Thanks for the comment, Troy! In a perfect world, we would release a game and all top prizes would be won before we end each game. However, sometimes games are no longer popular with our players or retailers simply aren't ordering them anymore, so it makes more sense to end a game and replace it with one that has more prizes available to be won. Whenever we end a game, all remaining prizes go back to our great state - 50% go into the NC education fund, and 50% go to prizes for promotions and other games!

Wow! Last ticket! Wonder how long that ticket had been waiting on someone to but it in that place. Sitting and waiting every since November of 2020, 2 years and 4 months, just waiting on someone to buy it. Now of course, the store might have ordered that roll and others, because they was running low on tickets. Guess the rest of them tickets, will probably not go out now, in the warehouse now, since the last top prize was won. Congratulations on your big win!
