Raleigh man collects $1 million prize

Travis Davis of Raleigh took a chance on a $10 scratch-off ticket and won a $1 million prize.

Davis bought his lucky 50X The Cash ticket from Five Points Family Fare on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.

When he arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $427,503.

The 50X The Cash game debuted in February of 2022 with eight top prizes of $1 million. One $1 million prize remains to be claimed.

If he won 1 million, why was he only given $600,000? And... walking away with only $427,503, after paying taxes, is less than half a million. So, do you actually win what the ticket states you win, or what the state tells you despite what the ticket says? NC Lottery
At one time, all $1 million prizes for instant games were awarded as annuities. Winners got $50,000 a year for 20 years. Players asked for the same choice in big instant wins that they had with Powerball. They wanted a choice of taking the annuity or a lump sum. The lump sum on a $1 million prize is $600,000. It's the winner's choice. $1 million annuity paid over 20 years or $600,000 lump sum. The tax withholding is the same, just applied against the lump sum once or the annuity payment every year.

I think the title would be more accurate if it read: Raleigh man collects $427,503 prize. The man who won did not collect $1 million.
