Mecklenburg County woman wins $5 million lottery prize

Faith Granwehr of Charlotte tried her luck on a $30 scratch-off and won the first $5 million prize of the game.

Granwehr bought her lucky $5,000,000 Ultimate ticket from the Harris Teeter on South Boulevard in Charlotte.

When Granwehr arrived at lottery headquarters on Monday, she could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $250,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. She chose the lump sum of $3 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $2,137,509.

The $5,000,000 Ultimate game debuted in March with five $5 million prizes and 15 $100,000 prizes. Four $5 million prizes and 11 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

I tend to look at lottery regions and payouts above $100K. Donald S. is correct in that the majority of the prizes $100K and above are distributed the central and west lottery regions. In fact 74% of $100k prizes this year have went to Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro and Asheville regions, and 26% to Greenville and Wilmington regions. And so far this year the Charlotte region has won 30% of all prizes $600k and above while only comprising 24% of the state's population.

Donald Someone bought a $2 Powerball ticket from the Circle K on Cleveland Avenue in Kings Mountain and won a $1 million. A women in Shelby won $1 million dollars in the lottery and months later she won $2 million on a scratch off ticket. Both towns are in Cleveland County. Even I won $152K back in 2008 playing Carolina Cash 5 and I got my ticket from a local store here in Kings Mountain, NC. Lots of winnings happens in small places.

Donald has a very valid point. what he is saying is that all the big winners are all in the charlotte area. he's not saying if you move there that anyone would win that should be obvious.
