Mecklenburg County man wins first $1 million top prize in new game

Jerry Mullins of Pineville tried his luck on a $10 scratch-off and won the first $1 million prize in a new scratch-off game.

He bought the lucky Multiplier Mania ticket from the Food Lion on Johnston Road in Charlotte.

When Mullins arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $427,503.

Multiplier Mania debuted last month with six $1 million top prizes. Five $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

To Joseph R. You are misinformed you must be blind because what I see is just about all top prizes is hit in Charlotte so don't call me out without getting you facts straight period....

@Joseph R.-I agree; a lot of winners are from smaller cities or small towns. Example: I noted the last 6 big scratch off winners on the news blog for up to July 17 and only two were from larger cities Charlotte and Fayetteville. The other winners were in Garner, Beulaville, Waynesboro, Greenville. I noted last month's big winners too and at least 3/4 were not from the larger cities in NC. Regardless, good luck to all of us and congrats to the winners.

I know I will be blasted for this but I feel winning the lottery is about being at the right place at the right time. The comments about cheating just dont ring true to me. Yes when I play I hope I win but it is entertainment for me. I take a break from playing when I become too frustratedNC Lottery

Oh man thank God somebody in Charlotte finally won ANOTHER million dollars. I was getting concerned with the ones that were winning in Raleigh so much! I had thought that Charlotte was going to be like the whole western end of the state. Congratulations.

@Bobby D, your "always, always....Charlotte" comment is clearly coming from a VERY misinformed place! I make comments about winner locations based on the numbers FROM the lottery! And the FACTS are that the MAJORITY of GRAND prizes from scratch-offs come from outside Mecklenburg county! In fact, I can state confidently that it is almost certain the 3, 4 or 5 Million jackpot prizes will be won in county with less than 100k population. PERIOD!

Gloria c, I’m sure he will win again, as there has been at least a dozen winners that I have read about, probably many more, of winners buying scratch offs and winning jackpots, only to repeat the same feat again, against all logical odds. If it happened once maybe,,,,,, dozens of times,,,,?
