Cary man bags $1 million scratch-off prize

Satyaprasad Kiran of Cary took a chance on a $50 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize.

Kiran bought his lucky $10 Million Spectacular ticket from Snack Shop on N.C. 55 in Cary.

When Kiran arrived Wednesday to collect his winnings, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,014.

The $10 Million Spectacular game debuted in December with five top prizes of $10 million, 20 prizes of $1 million and 20 prizes of $100,000. Five $10 million prizes, 15 $1 million prizes and 18 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

@ Tarence and Stafford: I have kept track of big scratch off winners from the News Blog in January and the most winners are not from the larger cities. For example here are 12 examples as of 1/24 of big scratch off wins: Moore Co, Statesville, Rockingham, Johnston, Buncombe, Carteret, Wake, Duplin, Mecklenburg, Onslow, Haywood, and Cary.

Hey there, Lorinda! Approximately 16.2 million tickets were printed for the $10 Million Spectacular scratch-off game - you can actually find this number by multiplying the odds on the game page with the number of total prizes in a tier (i.e. 5 total top prizes x 3,255,582 [odds are 1 in 3,255,582]). We aren't able to share real-time sales data for every ticket sold, but you can submit a request to player.info@lotterync.net and a member of our team may be able to share how many packs of tickets have been dispersed and activated so far! Unfortunately, the social team does not have those numbers on hand though!

Congrats. As for me I have purchased 3 of the $50 tickets and won nothing. I was hoping for at least a $100 but won nothing. Maybe I will try again one day.

Every high dollar ticket are placed in the western part of the state its just not being played fair no way people abroad can win those ticketsNC Lottery
Hey there, Stafford! If you read the blog or our social media pages long enough, you'll see that we have winners in all different places across North Carolina. We get similar comments from players in every region of the state--some notice that there are many winners in the east. Some say the same thing about the west. Many think that only big cities have big winners. And some mention that a lot of big winners are from small towns. The truth is that it takes a lot of luck to win no matter where you live or play - big city or small town, east or west!

I have to agree with Scott. People west of I-77 don't stand a chance of winning any jackpots. It's always Charlotte, Raleigh and coastal areas. And you say the odds are the same? I have really cut back on buying any tickets because I'm tired of supporting everyone east of I-77.NC Lottery
Hi, Tarence! Anywhere there are more chances being taken to win—for example Raleigh or Charlotte—the odds will play out more often there over time. You'll have a larger volume of both winning and non-winning tickets in proportion with the odds. That has no effect on the likelihood of a particular ticket winning or not winning a prize, whether it be in a big city or a small town. It has to be that way in order for the lottery to be fair to everyone.

I agree 100% I tried 3 times and did not win anything! Way to expensive for my pocketbook. I live in Yadkin county. I was told that the big winners are always in larger cities.. I believe it now ??

I have bought 3 of these dang $50 scratch offs and can’t even win my money back. Ridiculous. Big wins are always in the bigger cities not in Wilkes County
