A lively crowd recently gathered on the grounds of an old high school in Halifax County for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating Weldon City Schools’ new middle and high school.
Generations of proud “Charger” alumni, educators and community leaders cheered as the first shovel of dirt was turned, marking the official start of construction. Demolition immediately followed, with an excavator carefully dismantling the former Weldon STEM High School Career Academies building.
The new 6-12th grade school will replace two existing schools, creating a combined campus with modern classrooms and state-of-the-art facilities.
“We are building more than just two schools today,” shared Weldon City Schools Board of Education Vice-Chair Tiffany Hale. “We are building a legacy for generations to come.”
The long-awaited school construction totals up to $65 million in expected costs, with over $50 million coming from the lottery through needs-based grants.
“It represents the largest investment per student for Weldon in many, many years,” shared Nancy Sandoval, mayor pro tem of Weldon.
Your participation in the lottery enables transformative projects like this across the state. Last year alone, 16 counties were awarded more than $416 million in school construction grants from our needs-based capital fund. Groundbreakings and ribbon-cutting events like this display the tangible use of lottery funds to help move our students forward with new schools and classrooms.
