Alamance County man bags $1 million scratch-off prize

Eveling Tercero Escalante of Burlington tried his luck on a $25 scratch-off ticket and won a $1 million prize.

Escalante bought his lucky Spectacular Riches ticket from Kim’s Mart on West Webb Avenue in Burlington.

When Escalante arrived to collect his winnings Monday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,007.

The Spectacular Riches game debuted October 2021 with eight $1 million top prizes and 20 $100,000 prizes. One $1 million prize and three $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Lottery, can you please start revealing the way the prizes are won on a scratcher. What number on the role and was it a matching number or the symbol? I think the people would like to know it's interesting??????

Hi NCEL, To continue on Patricia H's question, what is the threshold where an annuity is involved. The reason I ask is because, the top prize winner of The Double Diamond Cashword game which is $500,000 received $357,503. This aligns with the stated tax rates NCEL witholds: (4.5% for NC taxes on prizes over $599, and 24% for federal taxes on prizes over $5,000), so there wasn't an annuity for that prize.NC Lottery
Hey there, Eugene! Thanks for your question. Generally, top prizes on scratch-offs over $1 million are given the choice between annuity or lump sum amounts. So since the top prize with Double Diamond Cashword is $500,000, it is only offered as the lump sum amount. Hope this helps to clarify!

How is it that after winning one million dollars the lump sum is only 600,000.00.There is 400,000.00 missing----what happened to that amount. I know that fed and state taxes have to be taken out, but how is the take home only 429,007.00. Thank YouNC Lottery
Hi, Patricia! Great question! Winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner.
