Raleigh man celebrates $5 million win

Raleigh resident Paul Leonard took a chance on a $30 scratch-off ticket and won a $5 million prize.

Leonard bought his lucky 200X The Cash ticket from Cool Mart on Penny Road in Raleigh.

When Leonard arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $250,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $3 million. He chose the $3 million lump sum and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $2,145,009.

The 200X The Cash game debuted in March 2022 with six top prizes of $5 million and 18 $100,000 prizes. One $5 million prize and two $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Hi, Felicia! Winners are given a choice between the annuity prize amount as payments over 20 years ($250k per year for $20 years for this prize), or a lump sum amount up front ($3 million). Whichever a player chooses is up to them! At one time, all top prizes were paid as annuity, but we now offer the choice so players can receive their winnings in the way that works for them!

Congrats! @NCEL sure is ironic the new 200X getting ready to come out next month and we get a top prize WINNER on this old one. You all never answered the question about how random these packs are. So the printer make a random run of winners then when the packs are released from Raleigh they are random again; otherwise a store would get consecutive packs and that is not the case. I pay close attention to the serial numbers of the ticket when I go through the whole last eight tickets on a roll and start a new roll the numbers are way off.NC Lottery
Hi, Angela! During the secure printing process, winning tickets are distributed at random throughout the entire printing run of each game. Then they're divided up into packs and the inventory is stored securely before being distributed to retailers by the lottery's sales staff. Where a winning ticket might show up is a complete mystery until a lucky player scratches one off and comes in to claim!
