Charlotte man snags first $1 million prize in new game

Charlotte resident Wilbur Grant tried his luck on a $10 scratch-off ticket and won the first $1 million top prize in a new scratch-off game.

Grant bought his lucky 50X The Cash ticket from EP Mart on South Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount.

When Grant arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,003.

The 50X The Cash game debuted in February with six top prizes of $1 million. Five $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

This is a question regarding the Powerball/Powerplay. Why is it that if the powerplay is x 3/4/5 for 5 numbers, why player only gets 2 million????? That's not right. Multiplier should MULTIPLY!!!!NC Lottery
Hi Darlene, that is correct, the Powerball PowerPlay multiplier will apply as 2X to a ticket that matches all 5 white balls. The rules of the Powerball PowerPlay add-on are determined by the Multi-State Lottery Association. More information can be found at https://www.powerball.com

I still think smaller towns and counties win more than larger cities. I check the website most mornings and started keeping count of the big winner stories on the news blog. For January, the winners were from the following counties or cities (bought ticket in these places): Moore, Statesville, Rockingham, Johnston, Buncombe, Cateret, Wake, Duplin, Mecklenburg (2), Onslow, Haywood, Cary, Davidson. February was roughly the same, i.e., smaller towns/counties had more big wins than larger cities.

Congrats Wilbur, I purchased the same ticket and had every winning number on the darn ticket and the payout was $100.00 bucks lol! Couldn’t believe the prizes were $5 and $10 bucks smh! Maybe next time!!!!

Congrats to the winner, million dollar prize, what's crazy to me is he won a million bucks and took home less than half his winnings, after taxes. He over half a million dollars in taxes, wow!!!! Still not a bad win after only spending 10$ on the ticket. I have yet to try that game, will definitely have to try my luck soon. Congrats againNC Lottery
Hi, Michael! With this $1 million prize, the winner could choose annual payments of $50,000 for 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000 all at once. Whatever a winner chooses is up to them, but either way we are required to withhold the minimum tax amount - 4.5% for NC state taxes, and 24% for federal.

If you talk to a professor of math and statistics, they would tell you that places where more people live and play the lottery do not have a better chance to win; there are just more people playing there. When the odds are the same for everyone, you expect there to be an even proportion - not number of winners - in different areas. No matter where you live or where you play, you have the same chance to beat the odds as anyone else.
