Stephanie Coulter of Clemmons waited for her husband and son to get home to surprise them with the news of her $100,000 Powerball win.
“I was waiting for them when they walked in the door,” Coulter laughed. “I didn’t want to tell them over the phone.”
Coulter bought her lucky $3 Power Play ticket from the Lowe’s Foods on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.
“That’s the grocery store we go to every week,” she said. “You always hear about people winning in random places but I didn’t expect it to be there.”
She matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000 in Saturday’s drawing. Her prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.
“I was in disbelief,” she recalled.
Coulter’s ticket became one of four that won big prizes Saturday. A second $3 Power Play ticket purchased in Fayetteville won $100,000 and $2 tickets from Concord and Winston-Salem won $50,000.
Coulter arrived in Raleigh on Wednesday to claim her winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $71,501. She plans to use her winnings to take a trip to New York, pay for her children’s college, and invest.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at an $865 million annuity or $416.1 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Powerball is one of six draw games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play.
