Winston-Salem woman wins first $2 million prize in scratch-off game

Adriana Salgado Calderon of Winston-Salem took a chance on a $20 scratch-off and won the first $2 million top prize in the $2,000,000 Diamond Deluxe game.

Calderon bought her lucky ticket from Brother Food Mart on Indiana Avenue in Winston-Salem.

When Calderon arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive her prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. She chose the lump sum of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $858,006.

The $2,000,000 Diamond Deluxe game debuted in December with four $2 million top prizes and eight $100,000 prizes. Three $2 million prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Hey there, Frankie! Winners are given the choice between a $2 million payment paid out over 20 years (payments of $100,000 a year), or a lump sum of $1.2 million all at once. The difference between the lump sum and the annuity accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the prize to the winner. Which option a winner chooses is up to them, but we are required to withhold minimum state (4.5%) and federal (24%) taxes from either option!
