Scotland County man trusted his gut and won a $2 million prize

Donnie Leviner of Laurinburg had a gut feeling he should buy a lottery ticket and his intuition paid off with a $2 million win.

“Something just told me to buy it,” he said.

Leviner, 18, said he had only bought a few lottery tickets before his $2 million win.

“I was in disbelief,” Leviner recalled. “I really didn’t think it was true.”

He bought his lucky $20 Big Cash Payout ticket from Sneads Grove Convenience on Sneads Grove Road in Laurel Hill.

“I initially just went there to fill up the lawn mower,” he laughed.

When Leviner arrived Monday to collect his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the lump sum of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $858,006.

Leviner said he hadn’t decided what to do with his winnings but he wanted to “spend it wisely.”

Big Cash Payout debuted in July with four $2 million top prizes and eight $100,000 prizes. Two $2 million prizes and five $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Scotland County received $1.6 million in money raised by the lottery to help with school renovations. For details on other ways the lottery made a difference for education programs in Scotland County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Hi, Is NCEL considering stopping the lump sum penalty on scratch offs at some point? Many states like Florida simply take taxes out of the winning amount. Their top prize is not an annuity top prize. Would love to see NCEL offer a ticket that doesnt have an annuity payout as the top prize and its straight cash as the lump sum prize before taxes. Thanks, lots of us players get irritated with that top prize bc we know its really much lower. Not everyone is young and can take the payout over 20 years.NC Lottery
Hi, William! At one time, all $1 million prizes for instant games were awarded as annuities. Winners got $50,000 a year for 20 years. Players asked for the same choice in big instant wins that they had with Powerball. They wanted a choice of taking the annuity or a lump sum, and we began offering the choice. That said - the folks in charge of decisions like this read comments like these, so the future is full of possibilities! We appreciate you sharing this feedback with us.

$71,500.00 x 20 = 1,430,000.00NC Lottery
Hi, Marion! Winners are given the choice between $2 million paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $1.2 million all at once. The difference between the lump sum and the annuity amounts accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $2 million prize to the winner.

NCEL what is going on with all these repeats? I know there has to be more numbers available than repeating the same ones over and over!!!!!!
