Robeson County grandmother runs through store yelling after $1 million win

An emotional scene unfolded in a Robeson County convenience store Monday night after Jo Jones of Pembroke won a $1 million prize.

“I started hollering and running through the store,” Jones laughed. “I ran to the front and said, ‘Y’all I won $1 million.”

Jones bought her lucky $10 Million Spectacular ticket from Kwik Stop on U.S. 74 in Rowland.

“It’s like a dream,” she said. “This still just feels unreal.”

Jones, a grandmother of 13, said she plans to use her winnings to help out her family.

“I always said if I ever win the lottery I’m going to help my children,” she said. “I’ll help them in any way I can.”

When Jones arrived Tuesday to collect her winnings, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive her prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,014.

The $10 Million Spectacular game debuted in December with five top prizes of $10 million, 20 prizes of $1 million and 20 prizes of $100,000. Three $10 million prizes, 11 $1 million prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

The state provided $50 million in grants, using money raised by the lottery, to help Robeson County build a new career and technology high school. For details on other ways Robeson County benefits from lottery funds, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

@Joann L. The ticket cost $50, but you're right, a $429,000 after-tax win is life-changing. I patiently wait my turn. :-)

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUCEMENT! It is not a good idea to advertise you have a big win by "hollering and running through the store." The first thing to do is fill out the back of the ticket and sign it, and then go "hollering and running through the store." ??

Better for them to take the taxes out now. Spending $10 and taking home $429,000 I will take that swing in profit anytime anyday!! Congrats!!

Bobby M. I totally agree with you! The only Annuity should be on the Top jackpot! All others should be taxed from the top instead. Winners agree to it because it's in the rules! I just don't agree with it!

Congrats!! But that's a whole lot of money that they took out in taxes.NC Lottery
Hi, Allison! Winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner! Whether a winner chooses annuity or lump sum payments is up to them, but we're required to withhold minimum state (4.5%) and federal (24%) taxes from whichever option they choose.

I think they take out to much money in taxes that is ridiculous.NC Lottery
Hey there, Bobby! The winner chooses either a $1 million annuity as the prize or a $600,000 lump sum. The same tax withholding is apply to either win - 4.5% for NC state taxes and 24% for federal. With the annuity, you have the withholding done each year as you get your $50,000 annuity for 20 years. With the lump sum, tax withholding from us is done once with the payment up front. The lottery used to only pay the $1 million prizes as annuities, but players asked for a choice of lump sum, so winners can choose between the annuity or lump sum options!
