Davidson County man collects $1 million scratch-off win

Dwayne Hinkle of Lexington tried his luck on a $10 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize.

Hinkle bought his lucky Ultimate Dash ticket from the Grab and Go on West Center Street in Lexington.

When Hinkle arrived Friday to collect his winnings, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,003.

The Ultimate Dash game began in April with six top prizes of $1 million. Three $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

Players can enter their Ultimate Dash scratch-offs in a second-chance drawing for a chance to compete in an Ultimate Dash Challenge Event. Participants will have 90 seconds to race through a warehouse at Charlotte Motor Speedway collecting as much merchandise as possible and a lucky player could win a prize of $2 million.

Hi, William! The odds are set at the beginning of the game when millions of tickets are printed. Winning and non-winning tickets are distributed at random throughout the entire game. All instant games are audited before and after the game to ensure the game is as advertised. We wish every ticket could be a lucky winner, but prize money comes from non-winning tickets. I have purchased a lot of these Ultimate Dash scratch offs from different stores and won nothing. I also have purchase a lot of tickets on line and have won nothing. We believe it has to be rigged. It makes no sense that scratch off tickets are advertised as 1 million dollars but it's only if you take the annuity.NC Lottery
Hi, Michael! In general, top prizes of $1 million or more for scratch-offs offer players the option of the lump sum or annuity. The 40% difference between the two is not a penalty, but simply the difference that the lump sum amount would earn in interest if it sat in the bank for 20 years. At one time, all $1 million+ prizes for instant games were awarded as annuities. Players wanted a choice of taking the annuity or a lump sum, so we added the lump sum option to let winners choose for themselves!
