Wilmington dad turns Father’s Day gift into ‘dream’ $250,000 win

William Bon Viso of Wilmington usually receives scratch-offs as a Father’s Day gift from his aunt, but this year he received $20 cash so he used the money to buy his own and won a $250,000 prize.

“I kept the tradition and bought them myself,” Bon Viso said. “A $20 Father’s Day gift became a blessing.”

When Bon Viso checked his ticket, he started shaking because he couldn’t believe how much he won.

“I was like in another world,” he recalled. “I was on a cloud.”

Bon Viso bought his lucky 20X The Cash ticket from the Walmart on Sigmon Road in Wilmington.

“Life is just all about timing,” Bon Viso said. “It just shows you have to always follow your gut.”

He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Friday and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $178,751.

“This is beyond a dream come true,” he said.

Bon Viso said he plans to invest his winnings and possibly take a trip.

“I still can’t believe I am here right now,” he said.

The 20X The Cash game debuted in February with 10 top prizes of $250,000. Three $250,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Check out the video of Bon Viso discussing his big win.

Wow! If I could win that much, I would choose 5 of my lady friend's on a cruise and take them all with me. That would be so much fun, spending time with my classmates on a cruise.

@NCL, you answered my questions with cut-npaste response for annuities, not why the top prizes are not paid out in cash fully? Win a second tier price is won in Mega or PB, the FULL prize amount minus taxes are paid to winners. Also, you mentioned players wanted "options" for how to receive money. Well, MANY have asked to receive FULL advertised jackpot for scratch off minus taxes as well! NC Lottery
Hi, Joseph! You can compare lump sum prizes to cash that's sitting in a bank account right now - if a winner wanted the lump sum, that would be the amount they receive up front. If the winner chose annuity, that money would accrue interest and over twenty years, the prize amount would be the annuity option. The difference in these two amounts accounts for the interest that would be earned and used to pay off the prize over those 20 years. Players can choose whichever choice best fits their preferences, but we're required to withhold minimum state and federal taxes from either option.

Why does a 250K prize payout get paid in full, but 1 Million prize gets paid over 25 or 30 years? I know enough losers on scratch offs fund the top prizes FULLY! Make it make sense.NC Lottery
Hey there, Joseph! At one time, all $1 million+ prizes for scratch-off games were awarded as annuities. Winners got $50,000 a year for 20 years. Players asked for the same choice of a lump sum in big instant wins that they had with Powerball. The lump sum on a $1 million prize is $600,000 - the difference accounts for the interest that would be earned over the 20 years and used to pay out the winnings if a winner chose the annuity option. It's the winner's choice whether they would like the lump sum or annuity. The required minimum tax withholding is the same, just applied against the lump sum once or the annuity payment every year!
