Hunter Hagerman of Thomasville tried his luck on a $30 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize.

Hagerman bought his lucky Millionaire Maker ticket from Marts To Go on Cotton Grove Road in Lexington.

When Hagerman arrived Wednesday at lottery headquarters to collect his winnings, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,009.

I think having a choice, is good thing to me! Seems like waiting a whole 365 days before the next payment is a very long time to wait on the check. Anything could happen before your next check. Taking the cash and investing some of it. But you will have cash in hand. Congratulations! Spend it wisely, it will last a long time!

Hey NCEL! But you're dangling a million $ win and taking 400gran off the top. 4get the player options. It's like false advertising a win of a million! I'm like the other commenter! Where does that money go! Why does these tickets have to come with an annuity! That's double clutching the player. Just saying what everyone else is thinking!NC Lottery
Hi, Sharon! Thanks for the opportunity to share more info on this! The difference between the annuity and the lump sum is not a penalty: winners have a choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When the lottery began, only annuities were offered for prizes like this. Players asked to have the choice to take a lump sum, so we began offering it. It is always up to the player to choose which one to go with. Hope this helps clear things up!

Why is it advertised as $1M if you get $600k?NC Lottery
Hey there, Alicia! Winners have a choice between $1 million over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000 up front. At one time, all $1 million+ prizes for scratch-off games were awarded as annuities. Winners got $50,000 a year for 20 years. Players asked for the same choice in big instant wins that they had with Powerball. Players wanted a choice of taking the annuity or a lump sum, so we began offering the choice to winners! The tax withholding is the same, just applied against the lump sum once or the annuity payment every year.

Win a Million and get less than half. Where does the $400,000 go if it's not taxes???NC Lottery
Hi, Darryl! Winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity accounts for what would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner, had they chosen the annuity.
