South Carolina man celebrates $500,000 second-chance win

William Wood of Charleston, S.C. tried his luck in a second-chance drawing and won a $500,000 prize.

Wood found out he won the prize in Wednesday’s $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawing when he got an email from the lottery. There were more than 1.9 million entries in the drawing.

He claimed his winnings Monday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $357,500.

Players get a second chance with their $10 Million Spectacular tickets by scanning the tickets into their lottery accounts where they are automatically entered into the drawing. Wood won the prize in the second of four $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawings. The date for the next drawing is March 5.

One more question…if someone doesn’t have a physical N.C. address how is it that they can create an account and And scan tickets for second chance drawings. I understand what you’re saying about passing through and buying tickets but creating account without a physical NC address is a whole other story. Please explainNC Lottery
Hi, Margaret! Players do not need a NC address to create an account with us - they can enter their home mailing address when signing up for an account. Players only need to be located in North Carolina at the time of purchase to buy tickets, but players do not need to have a NC address to create a Lucke-Rewards account.

I’m confused..how could he enter and win a second chance drawing if he lives in South Carolina. Did he drive to N.C. to enter his tickets. This is the kind of news that’s makes you wonder about lottery results. The answer to this question should be very interesting.NC Lottery

The only way players could enter this second chance drawing is by scanning the $10 Million Spectacular scratch-off ticket, which would need to be purchased at a North Carolina retailer while in our state. Players do not need to be permanent residents of NC to play our games or enter tickets online, but purchases must be made while in NC. Every entry in our second chance drawings has the same odds of being randomly selected to win - no matter who that entry belongs to or where the player is from. It just takes a lot of luck!

I would love to see the selection process if I weren't in bad health. It's sickening to see the same names winning over and over, rewards drawings mostly. I've had thousands of 2nd chance entrees and not a dollar to show for it. Guess how many scratch-offs I bought to get those points? I think if I knew that, I would be much more disappointed....

Poor North Carolina residents! The NCEL 2nd chance drawing system is totally unfair to us. My profile says I have over 41,312 entrees and never a win. That it takes only 1 entree to win is bull, and I DON'T believe it. How can a state where you are a struggling 72 year resident do that to you and give bogus excuses to long time players...disgusting to be honest.NC Lottery

Hi there, Gina! This winner purchased a $10 Million Spectacular ticket while in our state and entered it into Lucke-Rewards to earn points and an entry into this drawing. There is no requirement that players need to be permanent residents of NC to win - just as many of our players let us know they visit other states to play lottery games, folks from all over are able to play NC Lottery games while in our state. A player does need to be physically located in NC at the time of purchase to buy a ticket, whether they're buying in store or through Online Play (where location is determined using geolocation). With those tickets, they can earn Lucke-Rewards points and second chance entries, if applicable. Every entry has the same odds of being a winner in each drawing, it can just take a lot of luck!

I’ve seen where NCEL says the random number generator picks the 2nd chance winners. Then some people ARE REALLY lucky! Looking through the history of winners, I have noticed ALOT of the same names repeatedly. One stands out in “north Durham” location. Very odd?!NC Lottery

Sometimes it only takes one lucky entry to win - each entry has the same odds of being randomly selected in a drawing, though having more entries does increase a player's odds of being a lucky winner. Player names and locations are verified when players claim prizes, though the information displayed is based on the account info that was added by a player, hence why we can see variations in capitalization or in this case, "North Durham".
