$1.09 billion raised for education

Thanks to your play of lottery games, the lottery raised more than $1 billion last year to support public education in our state.

That’s the second year in a row that more than $1 billion was raised.

More than half of the money raised went to North Carolina counties to help build and repair public schools. All counties get funds to help build and repair schools and some, based on need, can receive grants up to $62 million to help build a new school.

Besides helping to build and repair schools, the money raised by the lottery last year:

  • Helped make college more affordable through scholarships and grants based on financial need. The new Next NC Scholarship provides recipients attending a community college at least $3,000 and those attending a state university at least $5,000 for help with tuition and fees.
  • Supported each school system with the costs of school support staff and transportation.
  • Provided a free year in an academic preschool to at-risk four-year-olds in the NC Pre-K program.

Several North Carolina counties have shared stories of the impact the new schools are having on their communities. To see those stories, check out these videos:

At the end of the fiscal year on June 30th, the lottery crossed the milestone of raising more than $11 billion since it started in 2006.

See how lottery funds have benefited every county in the Education section of our website.

What better way to tug at society's heartstrings than charity for our youth. All he while NCEL and other state lotteries are using "Random Number Generator" computers and Vegas style techniques from hi tech "firms" to beat players. But given our society's current state, we can always tell the children we did it for the money.

Dwight reference to your comment “ The same elected official that’s giving themselves raises every year they can care less about school supplies “ They made a commercial about paying bus drivers 15 dollars an hour ?? and now they trying figure why it’s a shortage.. we’re is this billion dollars going for real we are not stupidNC Lottery
Hi, Jeremy! We have detailed reports on our website that show where every penny goes. Lottery funds help support school support staff salaries, school construction and renovation projects, scholarships and grants, pre-kindergarten programs, and more: https://nclottery.com/education.

Billion dollars is raised but teachers still getting low pay… and not too mention school supplies shortage.before the lottery came tax payers we’re paying for this allocation.. now since the lottery we are raising a billion dollars a year..so y the pay still lowNC Lottery
Hi there, Jeremy! We raised over $1 billion for education across North Carolina, which is a lot of money, but the statewide education budget is about $15 billion. So, while lottery funds make a difference, they will never cover every need. It is up to elected officials to make decisions about how to fund education and how lottery dollars fit into that equation.

Why do teacher still have to pay for school suppliesNC Lottery
Hi there, Dwight! Last year, we raised $1 billion for education across North Carolina. That’s a lot of money, but the statewide education budget is about $15 billion. So, while lottery funds make a difference, they will never cover every need. It is up to elected officials to make decisions about how to fund education and how lottery dollars fit into that equation. So far, legislators have not opted to use lottery funds for school supplies, but the funds we raise help meet other important needs!

With so many parents complaining about the cost at the start of school.Having to buy all the stuff to send the child to school. And so many complaints about the same people winning multiple times. Why doesn't the lottery start A tax the more times you win the higher the tax. Take that extra tax money and buy all that back to school items and take some burden off the parents.
