Alamance County man wins $439,527 jackpot prize a day after buying new home

Benny Murphy of Mebane can pay off his new home using his $439,527 Cash 5 win.

“I closed on a house on Wednesday,” Murphy said. “They made a joke about lower payments if I won the lottery.”

Murphy bought his $1 ticket from Quickmart on U.S. 70 West in Mebane.

Murphy claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $314,262.

He plans to pay off his house, go on a fishing trip, and save some of his winnings.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Monday’s jackpot is $130,000.

If you're planning to be out of town and would like to purchase tickets before you go, you could set up auto-renew to automatically purchase tickets, or you could deposit funds over the course of multiple days to have enough in your account balance to fund a larger purchase all at once. gotta be a good feeling to be able to do that, wouldn't know, lol. hey ncel...question please. I just entered #'s off a jr. big ole bucks ticket and the bonus point game on that ticket was taking FOREVER to load, gave up. Used to be I could find where to go back and play for those bonus points later but not seeing how to now...did I just miss out by giving up ? This site is just too darned slow to do anything on it , ya'll need more bandwith or something or maybe I do, maybe we BOTH do !

Hello NCEL, When I try to set up auto-renewal, I receive an error message stating, "You have exceeded the deposit limit. Reduce the purchase amount to less than $505 per day." For instance, if we purchase 60 tickets daily, the total cost would be 60*7 = 420 per week, which is within the daily limit. However, NCEL charges for two weeks, resulting in a total cost of 840, which exceeds the daily limit of 505. It doesn't make sense to compare the total amount for two weeks against a weekly limit of 505. Many customers who frequently travel outside North Carolina for business are eager to use the auto-renewal option for game purchases. However, they are currently unable to do so due to this issue.
