Onslow County woman bags first $1 million prize in new lottery game

Barbara Jenkins of Richlands tried her luck on a $10 scratch-off ticket and won the first $1 million top prize in a new lottery game.

Jenkins bought her lucky $1,000,000 Money Rush ticket from Sunoco Mini Mart on Cedar Creek Road in Fayetteville.

When Jenkins arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $430,503.

The $1,000,000 Money Rush game debuted this month with four top prizes of $1 million. Three $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

The lottery has plenty of money. The annuity is a poor excuse to force players especially older players who might not have 20 years Left.

Hi, Benjamin! This winner could choose between $1 million as annual payments of $50,000 over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000 up front. The difference between the annuity and lump sum amounts accounts for interest that would be earned and used to pay off the prize over the 20 years. Whatever a winner chooses is up to them, though we're required to withhold minimum state and federal taxes from either option.
