Coming this April, Mega Millions will get a “mega” overhaul with improved odds on faster-growing jackpots.
However, you may notice some changes to the Mega Millions game much sooner as we prepare for that switch. After the Mega Millions drawing tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 7, the number of upcoming drawings you can purchase tickets for will start to be reduced.
The reason is simple. New game rules will go into effect with the first new drawing on April 8. So, you don’t want to buy tickets for drawings after that if the game rules are changing.
So, after the Jan. 7 Mega Millions drawing, the number of drawings you can purchase tickets to play, currently 26 drawings, will slowly be reduced. By Feb. 14, for example, you can purchase tickets for just the next 15 draws. The process continues until, finally on April 4, tickets can only be purchased for that day’s drawing.
When Mega Millions officially relaunches on April 5, players will be able to once again purchase tickets for up to 26 drawings, just like they did with the older version of the game. The first drawing under the new game rules will be on April 8.
Here are some of the enhancements that come with the new Mega Millions game:
- Improved odds to win the jackpot
- Bigger starting jackpots
- Faster growing jackpots
- A built-in multiplier on every play, up to 10X, automatically improving every non-jackpot win – up to $10 million for matching the five white balls
- With every win, prizes will always be more than the cost of the ticket
Tickets for the improved Mega Millions game will be $5 per play. This marks only the second ticket price change for the game since the first ticket was sold more than 20 years ago.
We hope you are excited for the new and improved Mega Millions!
