Michael King of Hendersonville always plays Powerball numbers that are meaningful to him and his wife, and they paid off with a $100,000 win.
“I have played the same numbers forever,” he said. “It is a combination of me and my wife’s birthdays and when we were married.”
King bought his lucky $3 ticket for the Sept. 27 drawing from Bob’s Pit Stop on Spartanburg Highway in Hendersonville. He matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. Because he bought a Power Play ticket, his prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.
King said he told his wife right away.
“I said, ‘I think we won the lottery,’” he recalled. “She was in shock and awe.”
He said neither of them could believe their luck.
“We just sat there for a few hours staring at each other,” King laughed.
He arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday to claim his winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $71,757.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $223 million annuity or $104.4 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
