Phillip Faust of Farmville had a good feeling about a $30 scratch-off so he followed his gut and won a $1 million top prize.
“Something just told me to get that ticket,” he said.
Faust, 58, bought his lucky MAX-A-MILLION ticket from the Hustle Mart on N.C. 121 in Farmville.
“I was elated,” he recalled. “It was hard to believe.”
When Faust arrived at lottery headquarters Friday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $430,508.
“This is perfect timing in my life,” Faust said. “We can live comfortably now.”
He plans to use his winnings to pay some bills and set some money aside for his retirement.
The MAX-A-MILLION game debuted in March with 25 top prizes of $1 million and 10 prizes of $100,000. Seventeen $1 million prizes and seven $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
