Powerball jackpot leaps into top 5 at $1.5 billion

This weekend Powerball players in North Carolina can try their luck on a top 5 Powerball jackpot all time with a $1.5 billion prize up for grabs on Saturday.

A winner could claim the jackpot as a $1.5 billion annuity or $689.3 million in cash. The jackpot ranks as the fifth largest Powerball jackpot and seventh largest among U.S. lottery jackpots.

A lucky North Carolinian bought a $3 Power Play ticket in Wednesday’s drawing and matched four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. The prize quadrupled to $200,000 when the 4X multiplier came up. The ticket was purchased using Online Play in Franklinton.

Wednesday’s big win made it eight straight Powerball drawings with North Carolinians winning prizes of at least $50,000 and six straight with at least a $100,000 winner. These wins have come from all across the state.

An Alamance County man plans to use his $100,000 Powerball win to help pay for his education. A group of nine elementary school teachers from Onslow County play together and are sharing their $100,000 win.

Tonight’s drawing, the 45th in the jackpot run, represents a new record for most consecutive drawings in a jackpot cycle. The $1.5 billion prize is the second-largest Powerball jackpot this year, trailing only the $1.7 billion jackpot won Sept. 6 in Missouri and Texas.

Players can buy Powerball tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website or NC Lottery Official Mobile App. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
