Gracie Burgess of Apex just had a Christmas she will never forget after a $5 scratch-off present from her grandmother revealed a $150,000 top prize in a new holiday game.
“I was with like 20 or 30 family members so it was a little chaotic,” she recalled.
Burgess said her grandmother gives lottery tickets to everyone for Christmas. She had an emotional reaction when Burgess won.
“She was in tears,” Burgess said. “She loved it.”
The lucky Peppermint Payout ticket came from the Han-Dee Hugo’s on Jenks Road in Apex.
Burgess collected her prize at lottery headquarters Monday and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $107,626.
She plans to use her winnings to fix up her car and put the rest into savings.
The Peppermint Payout game debuted in November with three $150,000 top prizes. One $150,000 prize remains to be claimed.
