Durham resident Dennis Whicker turned a lucky day of bowling on Thursday into a $246,222 Cash 5 jackpot win.
“I went bowling that day and had a real good day,” Whicker recalled. “My total score for three games was 777.”
Whicker said his friend told him that, with a score like that, he should try buying a lottery ticket.
“I took my friend’s advice and went to go play,” Whicker said. “You’re not going to win anything if you don’t play.”
He bought his lucky $1 Quick Pick ticket from Blalock’s Convenience Store on Roxboro Road in Rougemont. His ticket matched all five numbers in the drawing to win the jackpot. The odds of matching numbers on all five balls are 1 in 962,598.
“I kept looking at the numbers over and over again,” Whicker said. “I kept thinking, “Is that right?’”
He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Wednesday and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $176,665.
Whicker plans to use some of his winnings to do some home repairs.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Wednesday’s jackpot is $130,000.
