Mary Baker of Scotland Neck took a chance on a $5 scratch-off and won the first $250,000 top prize in a new lottery game.
Baker bought her lucky 20X The Cash ticket from The Smart Shop on 12th Street in Scotland Neck.
She arrived at lottery headquarters Wednesday to claim her prize and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $179,376.
The 20X The Cash game debuted this week with eight top prizes of $250,000. Seven $250,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
The state provided $87.1 million in grants, using money raised by the lottery, to help build new schools in both the Halifax County Schools and Weldon City Schools districts.
