A typical Monday morning for Barry Spellman of Wilmington morphed into one he will never forget when a $50 scratch-off won him a $100,000 prize.
“I kind of freaked out,” Spellman recalled. “I was shaking.”
He bought his lucky $8 Million Money Maker ticket from the Han-Dee Hugo’s on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington.
“I stop at that store every morning to get a coffee and tickets,” Spellman said. “I’ve been going there for years.”
Spellman said his big win has not sunk in.
“I’m still just trying to process it,” he laughed.
He arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to collect his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,764.
Spellman plans to use his winnings to pay bills, invest, and take a trip to Disney World with his wife.
The $8 Million Money Maker game debuted in December with five $8 million top prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes. Four $8 million prizes and eight $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
