A recent injury could not stop Marcella Hooker of Warsaw from celebrating after she won a $912,326 digital instant jackpot.
“I actually have had trouble walking lately because of an injury, but after I saw that I took off running and screaming,” she laughed.
Hooker played for $5 and won the top level “Alakazam” jackpot in The Lamp: Dark Arts, a digital instant game featuring a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win are 1 in 12.9 million.
“I was screaming so much it woke up the kids and grandkids,” Hooker recalled.
She claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $654,596.
“Now we can pay off the house,” she said. “This is a blessing.”
In addition to paying off her house, Hooker plans to use her winnings to buy a new car and help out her family.
In The Lamp: Dark Arts, a player can play from 50 cents to $30. After Hooker won the jackpot, it restarted at $100,000 and stands at over $167,000 as of Tuesday morning.
Digital instant games are played exclusively online on the lottery’s website or on the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Forty-seven different games are available to play online now.
