When David Fitzgerald of Greensboro bought a $5 scratch-off last week, he did not trust his eyes when he saw a $200,000 top prize.
“I said, ‘Let me turn the lights on to make sure,’” he recalled.
Fitzgerald bought his lucky $200,000 Triple Play ticket from Express Mart on West Market Street in Greensboro. He won the first top prize in the new game.
“I’ve been buying that one since it came out,” Fitzgerald said.
He said he did not expect to win big, but he kept his cool when he found out.
“I was cool, calm, and collected,” Fitzgerald laughed. “I was surprised though.”
He arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $143,501.
Fitzgerald plans to use his winnings to help take care of his granddaughter’s future.
The $200,000 Triple Play game debuted this month with four $200,000 top prizes. Three $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
