Patrick Kelly of Hickory took his brother’s advice, bought a $20 scratch-off, and started to celebrate with him after winning a $100,000 prize.
“We hugged it out,” he recalled. “It was a good feeling.”
Kelly said he doesn’t normally buy scratch-offs, but he decided to try his luck on a 100X The Cash ticket from the Raceway on U.S. 321 in Hickory.
“He recommended I buy that one,” he said.
When Kelly saw how much he won, he didn’t know how to react.
“I was dumbfounded,” Kelly said.
He arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his prize and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $71,756.
Kelly plans to use his winnings to pay off his student loans and invest for his future.
The 100X The Cash game debuted in January with four top prizes of $2 million and six prizes of $100,000. Three $2 million prizes and two $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
