Fayetteville woman enjoys $1 million top prize win

Elena Hendren of Fayetteville took a chance on a $10 scratch-off and won a $1 million top prize.

Hendren bought her lucky Jumbo Bucks ticket from the Short Stop on Rattlesnake Trail in Pinehurst.

When Hendren arrived at lottery headquarters Monday, she had a decision to make. She could choose to receive her prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $430,503.

The Jumbo Bucks game debuted in August with eight $1 million top prizes. Four $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

Hi, Greg! The $1 million prize, if the winner chooses the annuity option, would be paid out over 20 years. This winner chose the lump sum amount of $600,000 up front. The difference in the annuity and lump sum amounts accounts for the interest that would be earned and used to pay off the prize over time if the winner chose the annuity option. Whatever a winner chooses is up to them, but we're required to withhold the minimum state and federal taxes from either option.
